FAQs

Where is Bengali spoken?

Bengali is spoken by around 260 million people worldwide. As an Indo-Aryan Language, Bengali is native to the eastern parts of South Asian, known as Bengal. The majority of native Bengali speakers are in Bangladesh, while the language is used widely in the Indian states of Assam, Tripura and West Bengal. There are also significant immigrant communities of Bengali speakers in the UK, USA and Middle East.

Is Bengali the same as Bangla?

When it comes to language, Bengali and Bangla are the same, they are synonymous. Most often Bengali is used by international English speakers and in English literature. However, native speakers refer to Bengali as Bangla. Bangla has a shared linguistic history with Pali, Sanskrit and Prakrit but is thought that have become its own distinct language in 1000 AD approximately. For hundreds of years the language had a number of dialects and no set grammar rules, until the 18th century when an English grammarian wrote Grammar of the Bengal Language in 1778.
