An example of why expert translation services are so important
It has been reported recently that author JRR Tolkien’s translation of the Old English poem Beowulf is set to be published in May. We take a look at the report in today’s video.
According to an article released on the BBC News website, JRR Tolkein’s translation of Beowulf, the longest epic poem in Old English, was completed in 1926. Old English was the language spoken in Anglo-Saxon England before the Norman Conquest.
A spokesperson for London Translations said recently…
The publication of J. R. R. Tolkien’s translation of this famous work demonstrates the power which expert translation has to make material accessible to wider audiences. Effective translation of literary works spanning such large timescales and cultural differences is extremely challenging and so the translator’s notes edited by his son Christopher Tolkien will be invaluable. All good professional translators provide notes where there is ambiguity, or in cases where direct translation is not possible, and we look forward to reading this work.
