Translation Services linked to tests for doctors – Video

Translation Services – Do doctors need translation help?

The Government is considering giving legal powers to the General Medical Council which will allow it to test the English language ability of European doctors applying to work here. We look at what this change could mean for UK patients.

With effect from 2014, it is likely that the General Medical Council will be able to check the ability of doctors from Europe to speak English, something EU rules currently do not permit.
This change has been prompted by a number of cases nationally, where a doctor’s competency has been called into question because of their inability to speak or comprehend English adequately. This change should reassure and inspire confidence in UK patients being treated by European doctors.

A spokesperson for London Translations recently said,

“This is obviously a politically sensitive issue but it’s one which we support given the importance of effective communication between doctor and patient. Given the UK’s diverse cultural base, we feel it’s equally important to Translation Services and Doctor Testscontinue providing language support to patients whose first language is not English.”

We’d love to hear your thoughts on the matter. Please leave your interesting views and questions in the comments section below.
